BOM Followup

Hi Everyone,

I got several questions about the Block of the Month program that I mentioned yesterday, so I'm doing this post to follow-up and answer them as best as I can.

All Hallows Variation by Marcia Hohn

First off, here is a picture of all 6 blocks.  I got them all done!  I'm really, really loving the secondary pattern that is formed!  Answer to question 1:  what is this pattern and where can I get it?  This is called All Hallows Variation and is available from Marcia Hohn at her site Quilters Cache.  Here is a link.  It is a free pattern, but please read the terms and conditions she lists if you are going to use her patterns.  There are tons of other free patterns, too.  I'm going to have to do some investigating at her site!

Our guild's BOM program is run like this:  a person or group of people volunteer to do it for a period of time such as a year.  They choose a pattern each month and purchase the fabric.  They have a budget and money is provided by the guild.  They cut out kits for a single block, and bag them up.  Guild members may purchase them for $2.  It isn't a fund-raiser--it is more a case of hoping to break even on the money spent for the fabric.  They don't cut the exact pieces that are required.  For instance, if you need to cut 4 3" squares from one of the fabrics, there will be a strip in the kit that measures around 3 1/4" x 12 1/4" so that the purchaser can cut the exact size needed just prior to construction.  Guild members may purchase more than one kit--as many as desired.  You don't have to bring back the completed block--sometimes people really fall in love with the pattern and want to make themselves an entire quilt and may buy 12 or more.

I asked our committee and they make 40-42 kits per month.  We normally have around 75 attendees at the meeting.  I'm not sure if there are leftovers or not--it probably depends on the popularity of the pattern/fabrics.  They vary quite a bit from month to month.   The next month, each completed block that is brought back earns the participant one chance to win them all.  Since I made 6 this month, I will have six chances to win. The winner not only gets all the blocks, but the committee also includes any leftover fabric that wasn't needed for the kits.  In the past, I screwed up one of the blocks but since I didn't have any of the fabric to fix it, I just brought back what I had started and contributed it to the winner--if there was a bit of extra fabric, she could complete the block.

I hope this answers any questions.  If you have any others, feel free to let me know!

Thank you all for your good luck!  I'm crossing my fingers that I win.  With all of your well-wishes, I can't help but bring them all home, right?  Ha ha.  Knowing my history of never winning anything, I'm pretty sure that I'll lose them all, but you never know.

Have a great day!
JoAnne

I do love that secondary pattern. I'll have to save that pattern for the future.
